Sandwich Month

Parents and children love sandwiches all year long, but during August this favorite food deserves some special attention. Here is a fun sandwich recipe provided by Snacktivities! 50 Edible Activities for Parents and Children by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Jean Potter (Gryphon House).

Mix ‘n’ Match Sandwich Faces

Ingredients

Two kinds of bread, such as wheat, white, or rye, two slices per person

Choice of sandwich spreads, such as egg salad, tuna salad, or peanut butter

Choice of additional foods for decorating, such as raisins, carrot pieces, green pepper   pieces, celery slices, egg slices, almonds, olives, mushroom slices, cheese shapes, and apple pieces

Tools to cut or design foods for decorations, such as knife, small circle cutter, vegetable peeler, and apple corer

Toothpicks

Fork

Serving Tray

Process

1. Choose two pieces of bread for each sandwich.

2. Spread a sandwich filling on a slice of bread. Top with another piece of the same kind of bread and cut in half horizontally.

3. Help your child design eyes and a nose on the top half of the sandwich by pressing decorating foods into the bread. Design a mouth on the other half of the sandwich for the lower part of the face.

4. For fun, place the mouth sandwich halves beneath each eye and nose half, but do not match the bread types. Place mismatched halves together so the faces will be all mixed up.

5. Everyone chooses a top half and a bottom half that they like that matches or does not match, and places it on their own sandwich plate. Enjoy!

Top High Schools

Boise, Borah, Capital, and Timberline high schools have received awards for being named among our country’s top high schools. All four of the Boise School District’s traditional high schools appear in Newsweek magazine’s annual listing of America’s Best High Schools. The four schools are listed among the top six high schools in Idaho to earn this national recognition.

Of the 27,000 high schools throughout the United States, just over 1,600 public high schools made the list. Each year Newsweek ranks public high schools throughout the nation according to a ratio of the number of rigorous Advance Placement and/or International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school, divided by the number of graduating seniors.   The complete Newsweek article and rankings can be found at newsweek.com/feature/2010/Americas-best-high-schools.html.

Fun at the Zoo

August is a great time to visit Zoo Boise. The Wallaby Walkabout, a new exhibit which opened in June, is an exciting and interactive new way to experience the zoo. The exhibit, which features Parma and Bennett’s wallabies and a pair of kookaburras, is a large open space with a fenced walkway that allows you to wander about with the wallabies. They are docile and curious animals, and are a wonderful new addition to the Zoo Boise family. For details go to www.zooboise.org.
