For the Youngest Readers (Toddlers to Kindergarten)
MARTHA DOESN'T SAY SORRY! Written by Samantha Berger, illustrated by Bruce Whatley (Little, Brown & Co.) Martha likes to make mischief and refuses to apologize. When faced with consequences she begins to change her attitude.
SHAPE Written and photographed by David Goodman & Zoe Miller (Tate Publishing) One of the best shape concept books I have seen. Readers will have a marvelous time learning about shapes as they find objects in the pictures, and think about the shapes of objects in their environment.
STUFF AND NONSENSE: A TOUCH-AND-FEEL BOOK WITH A POP-UP SURPRISE! Written and illustrated by David Pelham (Little Simon) Pelham's award-winning interactive books have been entertaining readers, young and old, for many years. This cool lap-sitting book, featuring textures, is perfect for a young child and an adult to share.
For Readers (Kindergarten to 2nd Grade)
A FRIEND Written and illustrated by Anette Bley (Kane/Miller) As this timeless book shows so well, friends come in all shapes and sizes, and they all have a lot in common when it comes to fulfilling the emotional needs of another friend.
MOONSHOT: THE FLIGHT OF APOLLO 11 Written and illustrated by Brian Floca (Atheneum) Amazing detailed illustrations, informative friendly narrative, and end page highlights make this a great book. It is a wonderful retelling of the historic time when man landed on the moon.
LIBRARY MOUSE: A FRIEND'S TALE Written and illustrated by Daniel Kirk (Abrams) This is a charming story about working together to write stories, and respecting someone's privacy. Sam and Tom, a mouse and a boy respectively, find a way to collaborate and also respect each other's desire to maintain a low profile.
For Readers (3rd to 6th Grade)
TUMTUM & NUTMEG: ADVENTURES BEYOND NUTMOUSE HALL Written by Emily Bearn, illustrated by Nick Price (Little Brown) Readers who like mouse characters, such as Stuart Little or Poppy, will have as much fun with the adventurous Tumtum and Nutmeg. One great feature of this book is three stories in one volume.
RUMBLEWICK'S DIARY #1: MY UNWILLING WITCH GOES TO BALLET SCHOOL Written by Hiawyn Oram, illustrated by Sarah Warburton (Little Brown) Whimsical and filled with laugh-out-loud moments for anyone who has danced, or thought about adding ballet to his or her to-do list.
2030: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF TOMORROW'S KIDS Written by Amy Zuckerman & James Daly, illustrated by John Manders (Dutton) This cool book will get you thinking about the possibilities of a typical day in the year 2030. If you have doubts, and you want to provide some real perspective on change, ask your parents and grandparents what life was like when they were kids.
