READ IT, DON’T EAT IT! Written and illustrated by Ian Schoenherr (Greenwillow) This is a good book for teaching young children about book care. Schoenherr handles the topic in a comical and poignant manner.
1000 TIMES NO Written and illustrated by Mr. Tom Warburton (HarperCollins) When Noah says “no” he means “NO”! He can say it many ways and in many languages — after about the third page, young listeners will naturally start to echo his reply.
For Readers (Kindergarten to 2nd Grade)
BABYMOUSE # 8; PUPPY LOVE Written and illustrated by Jennifer L. & Matthew Holm (Random House) Babymouse has had her challenges with pets, but she is certain getting a dog will be different. You will laugh yourself silly reading her rationalizations and side comments about owning a pet. BANDIT Written by Karen Rostoker-Gruber, illustrated by Vincent Nguyen (Marshall Cavendish) Moving can be stressful for anyone, but for Bandit, the family cat, he is totally confused. Written through the eyes of the cat, readers will gain some useful insights on how to make moving pets easier.
COTTONBALL COLIN Written by Jeanne Willis, illustrated by Tony Ross (Eerdmans Books) Colin, the smallest mouse child in the family is not allowed to go outside to explore. Mother is too worried he might get hurt, until Grandma suggests wrapping him in cotton. Children with over protective parents immediately relate to Colin.
For Readers (3rd to 6th Grade) KIT’S WORLD: A GIRL’S-EYE VIEW OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION Written by Harriet Brown & Teri Witkowski (American Girl Publishing) This combined historical narrative and nonfiction interactive book provides an excellent look at United States life during the Depression Era.
ONE MILLION THINGS: A VISUAL ENCYCLOPEDIA Written by Peter Crisp, edited by Dorling Kindersley Limited (DK Publishing) With 1,000,000 things to choose from in this nonfiction book, there is a great deal of information to hold readers’ attention over multiple sittings. This would be a great resource for any classroom, library or waiting room.
HOW STRONG IS IT? A MIGHTY BOOK ALL ABOUT STRENGTH Written by Bill Hillman (Scholastic) This is one nonfiction book children will revisit many times. The amazing digital images, comparing the strength of 22 different objects or animals, included such wonders as hair strength, a shark bite, Martial arts kick, glue, an icebreaker and many more.
