For the Youngest Readers (Toddlers to Kindergarten)
BOO TO YOU! Written and illustrated by Lois Ehlert (Beach Lane Books) Lois Ehlert eloquently captures mouse and friends trying to keep cat from attending their harvest party. She uses collages of objects found in nature that should inspire some creative art ideas for this harvest season.
TUCKER’S SPOOKY HALLOWEEN Written and illustrated by Leslie McGuirk (Candlewick Press) Tucker, an adorable dog with costume experience, wants a spooky outfit for Halloween this year. A package that includes the book, an interactive poster with stickers, and a DVD is also available.
TRICK OR TREAT? Written and illustrated by Melanie Walsh (Candlewick Press) The interactive lift-the-flap nature of this book works as an introduction to dialogue with your preschooler about the celebration of Halloween in the USA.
For Readers (Kindergarten to 2nd Grade)
MISS SMITH AND THE HAUNTED LIBRARY Written and illustrated by Michael Garland (Dutton) In the third installment of Miss Smith’s infamous class series, she takes them on a field trip to the library. She introduces her students to an interesting librarian who just happens to know a lot about really scary stories.
NEVER SAY BOO! Written by Robin Pulver, illustrated by Deb Lucke (Holiday House) Gordon, the newest kid at Booniesville School, has good reason to be nervous. He is the only ghost. Scaring people does not make friends, but there’s more to Gordon than that.
MINERVA LOUISE ON HALLOWEEN Written and illustrated by Janet Morgan Stoeke (Dutton) In this hilarious episode with Minerva the hen, she figures out a way to get some of the candy that sure looks like corn. Look for other Minerva stories guaranteed to make you chuckle.
