THE EARTH BOOK Written and illustrated by Todd Parr (Little Brown) It is never too early to start kids on Earth stewardship. This charming book has some practical and easy actions for them to take.
SNEEZY THE SNOWMAN Written by Maureen Wright, illustrated by Stephen Gilpin (Marshall Cavendish) A snowman who is always cold sounds pretty normal for us, but in this story Sneezy finds the cold temperatures uncomfortable. Surprising results, from finding the right amount of layers to finding the right temperature, will make readers smile.
For Readers (Kindergarten to 2nd Grade)
SUPER SNOW DAY: SEEK & FIND Written and illustrated by Michael Garland (Dutton) Snow day or not, this astonishing book will provide some entertaining and educational time. Look for all the animals and animal tracks, symbols for winter sports, the word snow in 16 languages, 20 book titles with the word snow in them, over 100 six-pointed snowflakes, and much more—all while reading the storyline.
100 WAYS TO CELEBRATE 100 DAYS Written and illustrated by Bruce Goldstone (Henry Holt) This book has a host of cool and entertaining ways to celebrate 100 days of school. I found great activities across every subject area, lending possibilities for an interdisciplinary 100-day celebration in classrooms and schools.
SQUIRREL’S NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Written by Pat Miller, illustrated by Kathi Ember (Albert Whitman) Squirrel’s naiveté about what a New Year’s resolution entails requires a query to all of his neighbors. As he helps his friends achieve their resolutions, he discovers he has one after all.
For Readers (3rd to 6th Grade)
SOAR, ELINOR! Written by Tami Lewis Brown, illustrated by Francois Roca (Farrar Straus Giroux) Elinor Smith’s biography is a true inspiration for girls and supportive parents. In 1928 she became the youngest pilot in history, and to add to her many accomplishments, Elinor became the oldest person to fly the NASA Space Shuttle Simulator in 2000.
GREAT MIGRATIONS: WHALES, WILDEBEESTS, BUTTERFLIES, ELEPHANTS, AND OTHER AMAZING ANIMALS ON THE MOVE Written by Elizabeth Carney (National Geographic Kids) In conjunction with a National Geographic televised event and book edition for older audiences, thi wonderful book will serve as a great appetizer.
