It’s said to be one of the most picturesque views in and of Boise, looking down Capitol Boulevard from The Boise Depot, continuing your gaze north through downtown Boise, then to Idaho’s State Capitol, and finally the Boise Foothills as the backdrop.
Chances are if you work, live, shop, or dine in the downtown Boise area, you occasionally have to navigate some one-way streets around the Capitol and the mall grounds. You’ve probably done so even more often during the past two years while the Capitol was undergoing its extensive renovation, remodeling, and expansion, the first since 1920.
But don’t wait until your kids are studying Idaho’s history in the classroom to visit this historic site and building. Enjoy living in the state’s capital city and come to downtown Boise to experience Idaho’s rich history and walk the halls of Idaho’s Capitol. Did you know that this monument was designed in the image of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.? Here are a few other details you might not have known:
• Our Capitol was the 45th State Capitol to be built in the United States
• There are 35 domed state capitols nationwide
• The original construction began in 1905 when Idaho’s territorial capitol was torn down
• The cupola atop the Capitol continues to light the inside rotunda
• Original paint colors and the compass design reflect Idaho’s landscape and natural elements
• The exterior is hard sandstone quarried from Table Rock, just east of downtown
So, if you’re looking for a day trip idea close to home and close to every Idahoan’s heart, visit the Idaho State Capitol.
